The Chelmer and
Crouch Youth League offer the unique opportunity for
your club to participate in a
9 a-side format
football league for Under 11’s and Under 12’s in the
2009/2010 season.
The 9-a-side format has been successfully piloted the last three seasons in Essex by our League with the support and sanction of the E.C.F.A. This format is common in Europe and has also been established in other counties such as Buckinghamshire and Kent, and is widely accepted as the natural progression from Mini-Soccer to 11-a-side in Lancashire.
We believe, and it is generally accepted within most coaching fraternities, that any smaller sided game format promotes skill and general player development due to greater player involvement and the emphasis on technique combined with a proportional physical demand.
The Chelmer and Crouch Youth League believe we deliver this and are actively supporting and participating in the FA’s current study being conducted by the University of Central Lancashire to understand and evaluate the benefits of the 9-a-side format.

All we can do is agree with all the points put forward by the other Managers. Going 9v9 has done our boys the world of good. We definitely made the right decision.
As a league, we have certainly enjoyed playing for Chelmer and Crouch.
It will be my pleasure to give in brief my opinions as to the benefits of 9v9 football.
From a child’s football development point of view 9v9 is a must as it keeps the basic “art” of playing the game in the right perspective size wise. Probably the easiest way to describe it is to take a look at the size of the goals in 11v11 for a start. If an 11 or 12 year old child is even over-developed size wise for his age he cannot possibly have any real chance to stop a ball from going into the net if it is more than one foot over his head, in 9v9 this rarely happens if ever as the goals are in the right proportion.
